Angélique Cormier - Biography

Angélique Cormier, classical trained pianist and singer, is a multidisciplinary show designer, composer, educator, origami designer (for performing arts, installations...). You'll find below a selection of key-moments of her path.



​She has directed shows for indoor stages and public spaces, collaborations with artists and partners in France and abroad : 
le Tours Soundpainting Orchestra, Walter Thompson (NYC/Suède), Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble (NYC), POLAU- Pôle Art et Urbanisme (St Pierre-des-Corps)  Institut Français (Madrid), Lieux Publics - centre national et pôle européen de création en espace public (Marseille), Mawguerite-Bernardo Montet, Lycée français de Manhattan (NYC), College of the Arts (Singapour), Université de Lille, de Tours, Montpellier, Compagnie Off...
​She was awarded the "Envie d'Agir" grant in 2009 to create a professional ensemble , the  Tours Soundpainting Orchestra. 


​Since graduating in 2001 with a state degree in Music Pedagogy, she has given many workshops and devised pieces with diverse audiences (schools, colleges, middle-schools, universities, professional performing arts ensembles, choirs, orchestras,
 Ferme de Trielle,  CFMI, music schools and conservatories, prisons, medical specialized structures, companies…).

​In 2010 and 2011, she was the musical director of « Paraboles 2.0 », a show by  compagnie OFF, that was performed in Singapore, Tours, and Bucharest. With S. Perrusson, she arranged a Rock version of the opera « Pagliacci « by Leoncavallo, for an adaptation under a circus tent by the Compagnie OFF



​She created in 2014, with Gregory Mariscal, a "mini-opera", working with schools in Massy and musicians from the Massy Opera. This show was performed again in 2016 with five artists on stage, under the name "Héroïnes".

​In 2018, TSO and the Strike Anywhere Performance Ensemble (NY, USA) created the French première of the show « Pop Up, an Artistic Treasure Hunt », which received the grant « Ecrire pour la rue » from the SACD (a French organization supporting writers, authors, artists) in 2016, with the collaboration of POLAU-Pôle Art et Urbanisme. In October 2019, the US première of the show was performed by a French-American team in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, with the support of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the US.

Since 2014, she has been an Artist-in-Residency in many different cities, both in France (Dunkerque, Lens at the Université d’Artois, St Germain-du-Puy, Sainte-Maure-de-Touraine) and abroad. In April 2019, she was an Artist-in-Residency at the Manhattan Lycée Français.

​She has also found a means of expression in folded and sculpted paper. Using large formats, she performs regularly in public spaces and on stage. She designed paper sets for shows as for installations. As an artist working with paper, she has been collaborating more and more frequently with musicians, actors, dancers, circus artists, creating props, costumes, stage design. 


​

Since 2016 and 2019, she co-instigates with Walter Thompson and yearly international masterclass entitled the  Soundpainting Interactive Conference. She has been invited by Institut Français de Madrid in 2016 to give a conference and a performance with the ensemble Soundpaintingmadrid. 









On February 2020, she was an Artist-in-Residency at the College of the Arts Lasalle in Singapore, to lead the students through the process of a creation named "Walking, a multidisciplinary poem".
​

 She is co-author with Pascal Lenormand (engineer) and Pierre-Adrien Théo (composer, digital art) of a conference-show entitled “Si un watt m'était ôté” (If a watt were taken away from me), which has been running since 2021 and was co-produced by POLAU when it was first created.​
She created “Déplier” for public spaces, in which she dances with large-format folds that she creates herself, accompanied by two or three musicians.

She has been performing her first solo show for young audiences, “Le Concert d'Origami,” a visual and musical performance, since June 2021.

She tours her various shows in France and develops new collaborations around paper folding and music, both in France and abroad (Ferme du Vinatier - Centre hospitalier du Vinatier in Bron, CFMI in Lyon, Maison Bergès, Lycée Français de Manhattan, École de musique de St Fons, etc.). She was a guest on the Proust special of the program “Renversant, le magazine qui renverse la culture” in Venice in February 2023, where she created a temporary paper installation.

In December 2023, she composed an instant symphony live with the Entre Sable et Ciel symphony orchestra (Brest) and the musicians of the Ensemble Nautilis on December 10, 2023.

In 2026, his projects in distribution are: “Paper Orkestar” (created in 2026), ‘Cinékami’ (created in 2026), “Il manque des fauteuils” (created in 2026) and existing projects such as “Le Concert d'origami,” “Si un watt m'était ôté” (If a Watt Were Taken Away), a lecture-performance on the theme of energy transition, “Contes en plis” (Folded Tales), a musical origami storytelling show for all ages, and live concerts and performances
(soundpainting).
